Narrative Theory

Narrative Theory acknowledges that every person has his or her own, unique story. And by using Narrative Theory, we acknowledge that the client is best able to direct his or her emotional growth. Using this approach, we acknowledge that problems exist outside of people and this is a very important realization particularly when it comes to the work that we do with children.

Often, when a person deals with a persistent problem, the problem receives so much focus and attention that he or she starts to use the problem as an identifying label. This has the potential to create a self-fulfilling prophecy. The truth is that problems represent a very small part of a person's experiences (everyone has multiple talents and abilities) but the attention certain problems garner (think of depression, ADHD, anger for example) send a powerful message to the unconscious mind that there is something wrong with the person.

We work with our clients to create a balanced and empowered view of the self…a view that acknowledges strengths, talents and the ability to make long lasting changes.
